1The market in numbers

109
real HVAC ads live in the metro (252 pulled; the rest were noise the search dragged in)
84
from local contractors — this is a local dogfight, not a national-brand market
70
ads running over 90 days = proven spend. The long-runners are the ones to study
57%
static images. Video is only 20%. The metro sells with pictures

The heaviest advertisers: Roland Black (18 live ads — the most sophisticated creative operation in the metro), Integrity Heating & Air (11, all mini-split monthly-payment), Morris-Jenkins (the Charlotte giant — polished brand ads, no prices), Bulk Buyers HVAC (5, including Spanish-language), AirSouth (5), JB HVAC (5).

2What the market runs — the creative wall

Seven real ads that define the metro's patterns — and the full ad wall has all 109 with images, grouped by pattern, if you want to browse everything. Roland Black alone runs three of the most advanced formats we track — including two we had only as ideas.

Schraer review card ad
Review card · 644 days live
Schraer Heating & Air
A real Google review as the whole ad: quote headline, 5 stars, reviewer name, install photo, dealer badge. Running 21 months — nobody funds an ad that long unless it converts.
Roland Black handwritten ad
Our handwritten style — theirs
Roland Black (Charlotte)
Handwritten-note static with a monthly price ("$38 a Month with approved credit") and a personal sign-off. This is our core handwritten concept, executed by a Charlotte competitor.
Roland Black advertorial ad
Fake-editorial advertorial
Roland Black (Charlotte)
Styled as a news article — "Charlotte Home Journal" masthead, headline, byline. Our breaking-news concept was an idea on the shelf; here it is live in our market.
Roland Black price tag ad
Price-tag static
Roland Black (Charlotte)
Polished dark product shot with a hanging price tag: "AS LOW AS $38 PER MO". The price is the design element.
Integrity mini split ad
Mini-split $/mo — the crowded shelf
Integrity Heating & Air
Product hero + "Starting at $79 PER MO" badge + free quote button. 13 competitor ads run this exact combo — the most crowded pattern in the metro.
Morris-Jenkins tech hero ad
Tech-hero brand ad
Morris-Jenkins
"HOT? Why wait? Fix it TODAY!" — smiling named technician, no price, schedule button. The big-brand play: sell trust and speed, never the number.
Bulk Buyers Spanish savings ad
Savings-math ad — in Spanish
Bulk Buyers HVAC
"$60/mes = $720 al año de ahorro" — old unit cost vs new unit cost, teach-the-math style. Our energy-saving concept, live, in a language lane nobody else touches.

3Their concepts vs ours

We classified all 109 real HVAC ads against our creative concept system. 27 matched a concept we run or track. 82 matched nothing of ours — that gap is both threat and harvest.

PatternAdsWhat it means for us
Mini-split + $/mo13Our most crowded shelf. $79/mo is the metro's anchor number — matching it is table stakes, beating it needs a different angle.
Local-trust branding11"Family-owned since 1973", years-in-business, no offer. The metro default — safe, forgettable.
Monthly-payment offer8The payment IS the creative. See section 4.
Tune-up special ($39–$99)6The competitor volume play. We deliberately don't run service/repair ads — no change.
Scarcity-selection lead gen5"Only ten Charlotte homeowners will be selected" — one lead-gen shop, five near-identical variants.
Equipment-brand-led4Lennox / Tempstar as the hero. Matches our carrier-brand test concept.
Instant online estimate4"Get your price online" — the same direction as our one-flow booking work.
Review / testimonial card3Rare — and the longest-running ads in the whole pull. Section 5.
The good news: our two signature statics — full install price up front (direct-static) and the "Not only…" copy family — are almost absent from competitor feeds (3 of 109 show a full install price). The market hides the real number behind monthly payments; we say it. That difference is intact and worth protecting.

4Offers & financing — what the metro says, word for word

62 of 109 ads carry an explicit offer, and monthly payment is the #1 offer type (18 ads). The numbers cluster tight:

Financing language, quoted exactly (29 ads carry financing):

WhoExact words
Roland Black0% interest for 18 months for qualified homeowners · Flexible monthly payment options are available for qualified homeowners
Comfort ZoneNew AC - $150/mon $0 Down with 120 Month's. (typo shipped — $0 down, 10-year term)
Always Air0% financing for 6 months O.A.C.
NextGen AireFinancing from $85/month for qualified buyers
IntegrityPayments as low as $79/month

Almost every financing ad wears the hedge — for qualified homeowners / O.A.C. / with approved credit. Our "flexible monthly plans" wording sits right in the market norm. Note: Charlotte competitors do run "$0 down"; we don't — that stays a Sean-level call, not a media-buyer call.

Urgency is rare (16 of 109) and mostly one lead-gen template — the metro does not sell on deadlines.

5Review ads — rare, but they run for years

We checked every ad three ways: ad copy, text inside the ad images (OCR), and a human look at a 20-ad sample.

3 / 109
ads where a customer review IS the ad (~3% — an uncrowded shelf)
18 / 109
ads that mention reviews or ratings at all ("over 1,100 five-star reviews")
644 days
Schraer's review-card ad has been live. Other social-proof ads: 812, 508, 195 days

Read: the format is rare AND proven. The few operators using review ads keep them alive for years, which only happens when an ad earns its budget. The working anatomy (see Schraer's card in section 2): quote as the headline → 5-star row → reviewer first name → "Google Review" label → real job photo. Every one of our clients already has the raw material for this in their Google reviews.

The other two text-detected review ads, quoted exactly: Semper Fi — I almost made a $6,600 mistake. (customer story), and Yarbrough & Sons — We had Ben come by for a second opinion on fixing our A/C and the quoted price was half…
